The museum is housed in a beautiful building on the banks of the river Segura. The building, inaugurated in 1989, has been included among the top ten best buildings of the 80's in Spain. The watermills on the river Segura –“Molinos del Rio Segura” were transformed into a Cultural Centre and Hydraulic Museum.
A network of irrigation channels was crated by the Egyptians who made good use of the water from the river Segura. The methods and techniques used by them are the predecessors of the modern irrigation system in the valley. The ancient and most genuine watermills from the whole region were recovered and are on display here. The mills are an important heritage; they played a crucial role in the agricultural prosperity of the land.
