This is the easternmost island of the group, and features some incredible volcanic locations, which have been active until 18thC. The landscape is completely formed by lava and is fascinating. The island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The artist Cesar Manrique has enriched the landscape with his unique creations.
There are two capitals for Lanzarote: Arrecife-which is the old capital and Teguise-the new one. Together, both the cities have a lot to offer- Castillo de Gabriel and Castillo de San Juan are the two imposing fortresses in Arrecife along with its museum of Contemporary art. Teguise has the distinction of being one of the oldest settlements on the Canaries. Though most of its architectural heritage was ruined by pirates or covered by lava, it retains the old character and a few monuments like Castillo de Santa Barbara.
Being volcanic, the sand on the beaches of the island is also varied- you will find splendid beaches of soft, dark volcanic sand lapped by the crystal blue waters of the Atlantic. You can go fishing, enjoy golf or windsurfing on the island.
Some must visit spots on the island are: the volcanic Timanfaya National Park, a seven kilometre long cave system- Cueva de los Verdes, Whales and Dolphins Museum which is ideal for an informative family outing. |
