La Gomera :: Canary Islands

la gomera canary islands spain

The second smallest island of the canaries, is a paradise like location with lush and dense vegetation surrounded by clouds and mist at the highest points. You will not find such pristine, rugged nature anywhere in the world. It is home to the Garajonay National Park. The island is a perfect destination for delightful rural tourism: lush green woodlands, rugged ravines, incredibly shaped cliffs and ancient, unchanged villages with their traditions; a network of footpaths, hamlets and secret spots of incalculable ecological value.

The picturesque and quaint city- San Sebastian is the capital. This is where Christopher Columbus halted on one of his journeys to the Americas, and a museum dedicated to him is worth a visit: Casa del Colon.  Also worth visiting: Majona Nature Park, Los Roques rocks, Torre del Conde.
The traditional customs of the people are still very much a part of life and it is interesting to know about them. Especially the Silbo- the ancient and traditional whistling language used by the locals. Today all children of gomera learn it in school to save this unique and indigenous language from extinction.  Experience the distinct traditional fiestas and the cuisine, which will make the holiday truly unforgettable for you.

The Garajonay National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site with its dense and fascinating woodland. The forest today is considered a living fossil and is of enormous value.
