The stunning promenade surrounding the shoreline has become the icon of Alicante. Stretching over 500 meters, it was designed the municipal architect Jose Guardiola Pico in 1867. The seafront promenade is flanked by four rows of grand palms dividing it into three walkways. The waves of the sea are recreated through the vast wavy design of the walkways mosaic. The three different types of marbles in three colours are indigenous- Alicante Red, ivory cream and marquina black. The sidewalks are decorated with multicoloured flowers along the length of the promenade. The wonderful combination of the tri coloured mosaic, the green palms and colourful flowers make it really stunning and attractive. A picturesque fountain designed by Carlos Buigas decorates the end of the Explanada.
You can sit and relax in one of the numerous bars and cafes lining the promenade. Enjoy the cool sea breeze and the views with a glass of wine or some fine Andalucian cuisine. The municipal band entertains tourists in the evenings in the bandstand. The promenade comes alive in the evening with people out to enjoy a leisurely stroll, nice food and drink, and to enjoy the live music.
