The castle is situated on the Benacantil Mountain which affords spectacular panorama of the town below and the vast blue expanse of the Mediterranean on the horizon. Opened to the pubic in 1963, the castle features architectural influences from the 14th, 16th and 18th centuries in its three main buildings.
A fine example of the regions diverse and rich history, it is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Tourists visit the castle in large numbers to enjoy the spectacular views and to get a glimpse of the history of the region. All the facilities are in place for the visitors including two lifts from the bas of the mountain.
The castle is divided into three sections: Torreta, place where the old keep “Torre de Homenaje” can be found, the intermediary enclosure including the most important rooms, out of which of note is the Salon of Felipe II, and the Parade Ground, and the lower enclosure, dating from the XVIII century where the “Revellin of Bon Repos” is located. there is the CAPA exhibition for Spanish modern sculptures inside the castle which makes the visit even more interesting.
Featuring artefacts from the 19th and 20th century, there are creations from artists like Benlliure, Macho, Inurria, Oteiza, and Dali.
